Sawit Watch would like to express its deep concern and condemnation with regard to a recent shooting incident in an oil palm plantation that caused death of an innocent villager and many other villagers injured in Kuansing-Riau, Indonesia.

According to a joint statement by Jikalahari, Walhi, Scale Up, FKPMR Pekanbaru, Indonesia -

Walhi Riau, Scale Up, JIKALAHARI, Greenpeace and Forum Komunikasi Pemuka Masyarakat Riau (FKPMR/Riau Community Leaders Forum) paid condolences and strongly denounced the violent incident claiming one casualty and another one was hospitalized with heavy wounded in Kenegerian Pucuk Rantau village, Kuantan Singingi district, Riau province on Tuesday. The violence claimed Yuniar (35), a mother and single parent of four children, was shot to death and another farmer was critically injured as well as dozens of residents questioned by Police of Kuantan Singingi.

From a quick update and internet search indicated and also based on statement by NGOs concerned, the company allegedly involved PT PT Tri Bakti Sarimas (TBS) is RSPO ordinary member under grower category (attached pdf from RSPO website).

With that Sawit Watch hereby calls on the RSPO without delay to make public statement of condemnation regarding the incident allegedly involved its ordinary member and ensure the allegedly involved member be held accountable for it actions.

RSPO should also make an immediate instruction to member concerned to take necessary actions to solve the problem and hand-off violence measures.

We look forward to hearing amicable and constructive measures taken in place.

Yours sincerely,

Abetnego Tarigan
Executive Director, Sawit Watch
Member of the Executive Board
